AMA (11th ed.) Style Guide

An introductory guide to creating end-of-paper references in accordance with the 11th edition of the AMA Manual of Style (2020).

Book (1 author)

In the citation, put the surname first, followed by first initial and (if given) additional initials.

  • End with a period.
  • No blank space between initials.

For example:

Cooper T.
Berben SAA.

 

Citation example:

McLaughlin MAS. Cardiovascular Care Made Incredibly Easy. 3rd ed. Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; 2014.

Book (2-6 authors)

Put the surname first, followed by first initial and (if given) additional initials.

  • Separate multiple authors with a comma.
  • End with a period.
  • No blank space between initials.

For example:

Oren E, Kiene SM.

Crowder L, Welniak TL, Hoogland AI, Small BJ, Rodriguez Y, Carpenter KM.

Put the surname first, followed by first initial and (if given) additional initials.

  • Separate multiple authors with a comma.
  • No blank space between initials.
  • List only the first three authors. Add a comma and the phrase "et al" after the third author, followed by a period.

For example:

Olle TW, Hagelstein J, MacDonald IG, et al.
