Once upon a time, Snopes’ engagement editor Bond Huberman points out in a new post chronicling the history of the term, “fake news” designated content “so absurd you (almost) did not need a fact-checker to point out it was fake.”

More recently, however, the phrase has come to be associated with politically motivated half-truths and propaganda, and politicians started using it to denigrate the news media as a whole. It was time to make a change to the Snopes style book.
