Why?
- You’ll have an answer when someone asks, “What’s this book about?”
- A good pitch sells the book.
- The pitch forms the basis for the published cover copy.
- If you self-publish, you will write that cover copy.
- You want someone to pick this book up and read it, right?
- The query process: a query letter to an agent is a book pitch.
- You need an agent to get published traditionally (ie, with a publishing house).
- The agent will then use your pitch as the basis for their pitch to publishing houses.
- This is how the original pitch eventually becomes the cover copy you read on the back of a book.
Industry Standards
- Word Limit: 300. No longer than one page.
- Generally (but not limited to) three paragraphs: the hook, the mini-synopsis, and the housekeeping.
- Thankfully, there’s a formula you can follow.
